Duluth Hero Celebrates 92nd Birthday Posted January 29, 2010 by Dave Strandberg

As part of the "Dave & Dave Show" Friday morning, we paid tribute to retired judge and World War Two hero, Gerald Heaney, who is celebrating his 92nd birthday.  Heaney was awarded the Silver Star for his heroism on D-Day as a Second Lieutenant in the U-S Army.  He was appointed as a judge on the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals in 1966 and retired as the senior judge in 2006.  The federal courthouse in Duluth is named in his honor.  Also on the show today, four time Beargrease champion Jamie Nelson talked about her reasons for entering the marathon again this year.  A total of 75 mushers and their dog teams will be hitting the trail for the marathon and mid distance race that begins Sunday afternoon in Duluth.  Have a great weekend, the "Dave & Dave Show" returns on Monday from 9 to 10 a-m on 610 KDAL.

Letting The Dogs Out Posted January 28, 2010 by Dave Strandberg

We covered a lot of ground Thursday morning on the "Dave and Dave Show".  Among the topics were the Obama State Of The Union Address, the fish disease "VHS" that has now been found in Lake Superior and I-35 being a virtual skating rink during the morning rush hour as "black ice" caused numerous accidents.  We heard from Minnesota Twin Jason Kubel who was in Duluth for the Twin's Caravan and our guests included race coordinator Pat Olson from the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon who said the trail conditions are perfect for the marathon and mid distance races that start on Sunday.  We also talked with "Juror X", who served on the jury in the just completed murder trial of Philbert Barnes.  It was a facinating, behind the scenes look at what it is like to be a jury member in a high profile case.  On Friday we'll talk with several mushers who are set to take on the north shore of Lake Superior in the Beargrease marathon and much more.  Hope you'll be with us from 9 to 10 a-m on 610 KDAL.

Not So Smart Birds Posted January 27, 2010 by Dave Strandberg

Among the wide variety of items we discussed Wednesday on the "Dave & Dave Show" was a report from the Minnesota D-N-R that not all birds head south for the winter.  Some hearty birds, including robins, will elect to stay the winter and feed on left over fruit and bird seed put out by concerned residents while the rest of the flock heads to the tropics.  I think the old fruit may be clouding the judgement of these birds when they suffer in the Duluth area cold this week instead of sunning on the sand and using the Gulf of Mexico as a giant bird bath.   We also found out that Oregon voters approved raising the taxes on the rich to help solve their budget problems and officials in China may crack down on restaurants that offer cats and dogs on the menu.  On Thursday we hope to talk with a member of the Duluth jury that found Philbert Barnes guilty of second degree murder this week.   Other interesting topics are also on tap each weekday with "Dave & Dave" from 9 to 10 a-m on KDAL 610.

Get Off The Phone And Drive Posted January 26, 2010 by Dave Strandberg

Despite the first show, management has decided to keep the "Dave and Dave Show" on the air for another day.  On Tuesday, we talked about the new nationwide texting ban for commercial trucks and busses, the current laws regarding texting in Minnesota and the proposed ban on texting in Wisconsin.  Department of Transportation statistics show 16 percent of all highway fatalities were the result of distracted driving.  We also looked at the Duluth City Council's approval of a 15 foot no smoking zone around DTA bus shelters and a special use permit for Minnesota Power to build a new substation.  Later this week, "Dave and Dave" will get you updated on the upcoming John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon and talk to race officials and mushers about the event.  Hope you'll be listening Monday through Friday from 9 to 10 a-m on KDAL 610.

Here We Go Posted January 25, 2010 by Dave Strandberg

Well, Monday was the debut of the "Dave & Dave Show" on KDAL.  Duluth School Superintendent Keith Dixon and several other guests from the school district were featured.  We also previewed the Monday night Duluth City Council meeting and re-hashed the Viking's loss to New Orleans.  Now the debate begins anew on the retirement plans of Brett Favre, will he be back next year to try it again?  Or, will he retire for real this time.  Hope you will join us on KDAL 610 each weekday from 9 to 10 a-m for an in depth look at news events from the Twin Ports and around the world.  We plan to have occasional guests and always invite you to call in with any comments and concerns.  On tap for Tuesday: Wisconsin is one of about a dozen states that are now considering a ban on texting and driving...we'll talk about that issue and whether such a ban should extend to other distractions that  keep you from watching the road like you're supposed to be doing.   Thanks for listening!
