What a Beautiful Day! Posted March 31, 2010 by John Warren

We almost broke a temperature record today. 71 degrees was the record and we tied it. No complaints, considering one year ago the Miller Hill Mall was closed due to a blizzard. I mean, how often do you hear of a mall being shut down? And today, there were motorcycles running around, convertibles with the tops down and people walking around with their jackets under their arms. If we could have squeezed another degree to hit 72, it would have been great...breaking the record and all. But one degree isn't going to feel any different, and the fact that people were grilling, walking, smiling and enjoying life is better than breaking some record. What a beautiful day!

Easter Time is the Time For Eggs Posted March 29, 2010 by John Warren

And Peeps, jelly beans and of course, chocolate bunnies. Speaking of chocolate rabbits, how many seconds does it take before the ears are gnawed off and you're left with an Easter gopher?

I was in one of the big "Box Stores" over the weekend (okay, it was WalMart) and I stumbled into the Easter candy aisle. Wow! Chocolate bunnies that were 2 feet tall! Other rabbits with ears that were 3 times the length of their bodies. And when did SpongeBob SquarePants become an Easter tradition?

Easter baskets were  filled not with jellybeans, but with NASCAR hats and toy cars, Hanna Montanna stuff, soccer balls, etc. Of course, I guess, if I were a kid today, I'd love it. Although, if I think about it, I can remember what the pink jellybeans tasted like. I also loved the black licorice ones that my sister hated. More for me!

Anyway, Happy Easter everyone! I have my bonnet all picked out.

A Dark and Stormy Night Posted March 16, 2010 by John Warren

For those who like this sort of thing, the Bulwer-Lytton contest winners...

For all lovers of good writing, here are this year's winners of the Bulwer-Lytton contest, (aka "It Was a dark and Stormy Night" Contest), run by the English Department of San Jose State University, wherein one writes only the first line of a bad novel.

 10.  As a scientist, Throckmorton knew that if he were ever to break wind in the echo chamber, he would never hear the end of it.

 9.  Just beyond the Narrows , the river widens.

 8.  With a curvaceous figure that Venus would have envied, a tanned unblemished oval face framed with lustrous thick brown hair, deep azure-blue eyes fringed with long black lashes, perfect teeth that vied for competition, and a small straight nose, Marilee had a beauty that defied description.

 7.  Andre, a simple peasant, had only one thing on his mind as he crept along the East wall: "Andre creep... Andre creep...Andre   creep."

 6.  Stanislaus Smedley, a man always on the cutting edge of narcissism, was about to give his body and soul to a back alley  sex-change surgeon to become the woman he loved..

 5.  Although Sarah had an abnormal fear of mice, it did not keep her from eeking out a living at a local pet store.

 4.  Stanley looked quite bored and somewhat detached, but then penguins often do.

 3.  Like an over-ripe beefsteak tomato rimmed with cottage cheese, the corpulent remains of Santa Claus lay dead on the hotel floor.

  2.  Mike Hardware was the kind of private eye who didn't know the meaning of the word "fear"'; a man who could laugh in the face of danger and spit in the eye of death -- in short, a moron with suicidal tendencies.

AND THE WINNER IS...

  1.  The sun oozed over the horizon, shoved aside darkness, crept along the greensward and, with sickly fingers, pushed through the castle window, revealing the pillaged princess, hand at throat, crown asunder, gaping in frenzied horror at the sated, sodden amphibian lying beside her, disbelieving the magnitude of the frog's deception, screaming madly, "You lied!"

Happy Birthday to me Posted March 7, 2010 by John Warren

My B-day today. Big deal. I do remember when my birthday was a big deal to me: balloons, cake, ice cream and a few gifts. But best of all, another year older. Oh, boy! That much closer to getting my driver's license, being in high school, becoming a teenager, etc.

Birthdays took eons to come around. Now, you turn around, and there's another. Milestones that were important, like turning 16, 18 or 21 were something you looked forward to. Oh,boy! Now milestone birthdays are not approached with such enthusiasm.

Well, I'm not saying anything here that's not been said before. When I was a kid, I remember sitting in the back seat of the family car when we drove past this "old folk's home" in south Minneapolis frequently. There was a sign on the top of the building that read "Let us remember the aged, for yes, even you are getting old". I used to chortle at that sign while riding in the Ford Country Squire station wagon.

Oh,boy!

First Sign of Spring! Posted March 2, 2010 by John Warren

The first sign of Spring, harbinger of warmer weather has been seen! And no, I'm not talking about the first robin spotted, or anything blooming.  It's the opening for the season of the Dairy Queen on East Central! The lights are on, the posters are up and the marquee beckons! With any luck, the only blizzard we'll have to experience between now and May will have Oreos or Butterfinger chunks in it
