The U.S. Senate passed a food safety bill Tuesday morning co-authored by Senator Amy Klobuchar. She says it will strengthen the Food and Drug Administration's authority over growers to prevent outbreaks centered around bacteria such as salmonella. Klobuchar says the key is giving the FDA more authority to quickly find the source of contaminated food -- and then prevent similar outbreaks in the future. Klobuchar says she's also pleased that the Senate included her proposal to use the U of M's model for catching food-borne illnesses.
