DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - A report filed by Minnesota Power with the state Public Utilities Commission predicts an increase in the cost of electricity due to proposed new federal regulations and a move away from coal fired power plants. The Duluth based utility operates coal fired plants in Hoyt Lakes, Taconite Harbor and Cohasset. In the report, Minnesota Power indicates that several years ago 95 percent of the electricity produced came from coal. By 2025 that percentage will drop to about 53 percent as the utility buys more hydro power from Canada and produces more power from wind turbines.
