SUPERIOR, WI (KDAL) - A survey conducted this summer by a team of researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Superior shows that most people in Ashland and Iron Counties are opposed to an iron ore mine in the area. Nearly 865 people responded to an open-to-the-public online survey and another 102 responded to a random survey conducted by phone. According to the unbiased random sample, 44 percent "absolutely oppose" the mine and 17.6 percent "generally oppose" it. Most believe the mine would have a negative impact on the environment but a somewhat positive impact on the local economy and employment opportunities. Since no formal public opinion studies were conducted on the question of mining in northern Wisconsin, the UWS team says the survey was done to provide the unbiased public views regarding the proposed mine.
