ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) – Because of a shortage of natural food in the woods, hungry bears have been wandering into populated areas looking for an easy meal.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says there has been in increase in bear-human conflicts in northeastern and north central parts of the state this summer.
To keep bear away from properties and campsites, make sure to remove all food sources such as bird seed and dog food and secure garbage containers with tight fitting lids and store in a locked garage or shed.
Property owners could also consider installing electrified fences around trash cans to prevent bears from getting at them.
Coolers should be inside or in locked out-of-sight in vehicles.
Although black bears are usually shy and flee when encountered, they become bolder when food is in short supply.
Never approach a bear and give them plenty of space.
If bear problems persist after cleaning up potential food sources, contact a DNR area wildlife office for advice.
