Free agent DJ LeMahieu, identified as the New York Yankees’ top priority this offseason, is shopping his services elsewhere due to the gap between his demands and the Yankees’ offer, according to multiple reports.
LeMahieu was a first-team All-MLB selection with a .364 average, 10 home runs, 10 doubles and 27 RBIs last season.
The 32-year-old infielder has spent two seasons with the Yankees but general manager Brian Cashman indicated over the weekend he’s waiting for others to set the market on LeMaieu.
“Like always, we’ll come up with what the best options are, but we’re gonna exhaust his option first, which is to try to keep him here,” Cashman said on the YES Network. “He loves playing in New York. He loves playing for the New York Yankees. There’s a lot of things in our favor, but it ultimately comes down to the financial opportunity we provide compared to the financial opportunity others are providing. That’s the big unknown.”
Other suitors are not yet known.
A 2015 All-Star Game starter as a member of the Colorado Rockies, LeMahieu won the National League batting title in 2016 and won the AL title in the abbreviated 2020 season with the Yankees. He is also a three-time Gold Glove winner at second base.
