DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The Great Lakes shipping season gets off to an early start with the opening of the Poe Lock at Sault Ste. Marie Wednesday at noon.
Required maintenance on the lock was completed ahead of schedule allowing for the early opening request by the Lake Carriers Association.
The locks closed on January 15th for critical repairs and maintenance and the MacArthur Lock will remain closed until mid April.
The Burns Harbor and Paul R. Tregurtha were due to leave the Twin Ports on Tuesday and three other ships will likely head out on Thursday carrying iron ore pellets.
