DULUTH, MN (CBS-3) – Duluth Mayor Emily Larson is asking for $44.5 million in federal funding for five major projects in the city.
The money would come from the Biden Administration’s Congressional Directed Spending program.
Being the largest port in the Great Lakes, Mayor Larson is asking for $12 million for future repairs and restoration work on the Aerial Lift Bridge.
Larson hopes Congress will also support a $4 million project to dredge the harbor behind the DECC to allow larger cruise ships to dock.
Another project would give the Duluth Police Department $750,000 for programs that allow real-time updates to people calling 911 to report crimes. Those updates could include things like automated text messages and help fund more in-depth data tracking systems.
Officials with DPD say getting these systems would offer more resources to everyone.
Other projects that are being proposed are revitalizing Duluth’s fire halls and energy renewable efforts to lower the city’s greenhouse gas emissions.
The city has a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050.
Larson said certain qualifications and guidelines must be met for Congress to approve these projects.
U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith will present all these projects to Congress.
As of now, there is no timeline for when these projects could be approved.
