DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Area water researchers are studying dangerous currents along Park Point this summer.
The study involves adding a non toxic dye to the water to help trace the movement of currents.
Swimmers along the point may notice the fluorescent yellow-green water at times in July but the dye is not toxic and disperses within 45 minutes.
Beach goers will also notice a sensor buoy and GPS drifter tracker that looks like a red post floating upright in the water.
The project is funded by the Wisconsin and Minnesota Sea Grant Program and involves a team of personnel from both states.
It is hoped that the study will improve the ability to predict when and where dangerous currents form and develop a public safety warning and education program.
Park Point users may also be asked to take a short survey to guide water safety efforts in the future.
