SUPERIOR, WI (CBS-3) – Superior’s mayor is trying to bring an historic symbol back to the heart of downtown.
In 1900, the Grand Army of the Republic Arch was built to celebrate an annual meeting of Civil War veterans, which was being held for the first time in Superior.
The metal arch stood over Tower Avenue and Broadway Street until is was removed in 1921.
Superior Mayor Jim Paine announced last week that he would like to bring the arch back and, with approval, construction could begin as early as 2022.
It would cost about 100 thousand dollars which would likely come out of the city’s capital improvement fund.
The mayor says the project is already cleared by the Department of Transportation and Wisconsin Historical Society.
While the announcement may seem out of the blue, Paine said the plan has been in the works for years. When the city reconstructed Tower Avenue, they placed infrastructure underneath the intersection in case the arch were to one day happen.
Former administrations tried building the arch in 2013.
Paine said the new arch would give the city a landmark to call its own and serve as a tribute to veterans.
An official proposal has not yet been made to the city council.
