GRAND RAPIDS, MN (KDAL) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has updated its chronic wasting disease (CWD) plan after the discovery of a deer within the city of Grand Rapids with CWD.
This is the first time a deer with the disease has been found in this area of the state and the DNR will take steps to determine how widespread it is in the Grand Rapids area.
Samples of road killed deer will be collected with help from local authorities and culling is possible where it can be performed safely.
Although the new CWD discovery doesn’t make it a statewide problem, a DNR Wildlife Manager says the agency needs to take more of a statewide approach when it comes to sampling.
There are now eight areas of the state where CWD has been found in wild deer but fewer than 1 percent of deer have tested positive in those areas.
More information on CWD and what is being done to limit the spread of the disease can be found online at mndnr.gov/CWD.
