DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The City of Duluth and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources held a ribbon cutting on Monday to celebrate the completion of a 19 million dollar restoration project at Kingsbury Bay and Grassy Point.
The three year project restored 230 acres of coastal wetland habitat within the St. Louis River Area of Concern.
The Grassy Point restoration included the removal of about 130 thousand yards of wood waste that was dumped in the river from two historic mills at that site.
The Kingsbury Bay project focused on removing sediment deposited there by upstream erosion from the 2012 flash flood in the region.
The work brings the river one step closer to removal from the bi-national list of impaired regions on the Great Lakes.
