WASHINGTON, DC (KDAL) – On Thursday the Secretary of the Interior signed an order that withdraws over 225 thousand acres of Superior National Forest land in the BWCA watershed from any mining.
The order responded to concerns regarding the potential environmental impacts for the region and stops new mineral and geothermal exploration and development for a period of 20 years.
Friends of the Boundary Waters praise the decision as the most significant step to protect the wilderness in decades.
Mining Minnesota says it was a step in the wrong direction and was a political decision not based on strong science or careful study.
