MADISON, WI (KDAL) – An invasive insect that feeds on the leaves of over 300 tree species has now established in Douglas County.
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says the county has now been added to most of the eastern and central parts of the state that are under a spongy moth quarantine.
People in the quarantine area need to be careful when moving outdoor items that may have spongy moth egg masses attached to them.
Plant nurseries, tree growers and loggers must certify that nursery stock and wood products are free of spongy moths before being transported into non-quarantined counties or states.
The invasive insect has been spreading westward since its introduction into North America and is now in 53 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties.
At this time, spongy moth populations are low in Minnesota with no quarantines in place.
