DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Duluth Mayor Emily Larson and DECC Executive Director Dan Hartman held a news conference Wednesday to announce a 200 thousand dollar grant that will provide for a temporary ice chiller to maintain the ice sheet at the DECC arena.
That is good news for area youth hockey operations that held about 95 games, two dozen tournaments and numerous practices on the arena ice last year.
A UMD study showed the Duluth Amateur Hockey Association (DAHA) events provided about 10.3 million dollars in economic impact.
The arena also hosts the 2nd largest figure skating competition sponsored by the Duluth Figure Skating Club.
The old DECC arena ice plant was installed in 1966 and was shuttered this spring since it was well beyond its mechanical life-span.
Different ice plants are used at the Curling Club and Amsoil Arena.
