DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The timeline to connect I-535 to northbound I-35 has been delayed and the planned closure of the Duluth bound lanes of the Blatnik Bridge has been canceled for the time being.
Crews back in February made some findings of historical importance and culturally sensitive material.
At the monthly MnDOT public meeting on Monday, the Twin Ports Interchange Construction Manager, Pete Marthaler, says since that discovery, the agency has been following all state and federal laws including the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
He doesn’t know when that issue will be resolved, so at this time work has stopped in that area and the contractor has moved to other areas of the project.
The current setup of traffic to and from the Blatnik Bridge using Garfield Avenue will continue until next year.
The preferred detour for traffic between Duluth and Superior remains the Bong Bridge.
