SUPERIOR, WI (Northern News Now) – The Superior City Council on Tuesday night unanimously voted in favor of a new police vehicle technology aimed at driving down crime.
The new technology allows squad cars to recognize license plates associated with crime. The Automated License Plate Recognition, or ALPR, alerts officers in real-time if it recognizes a license plate in either national databases or Superior’s internal database.
According to the incoming Chief of Police, Paul Winterscheidt, the system works by using a 4k camera to constantly scan the lanes of traffic in front of a squad car to check license plate numbers.
ALPR began a trial period in August and about a dozen stolen cars were recovered during that time.
The system will cost the city about ten thousand dollars per year to implement.
