HAYWARD, WI (KDAL) – The lack of snow this winter has meant some big changes to the Slumberland American Birkebeiner.
The 50th anniversary of the event will feature a course that is reduced to a 10-kilometer loop, but the race itself will remain the same distance, with skiers making five trips around the loop if they are in the American Birkebeiner Skate SuperTour Elite wave.
The other American Birkebeiner races will be 30K, the Kortelopet will be shortened to a 20K race, and the Prince Haakon will be reduced from 15K to a 10K race.
Open track bib pickup is set for Tuesday from 4 to 7 p-m. On Wednesday and Thursday, open track events will go on as scheduled on the shortened course.
The Kortelopet Classic and Skate will be held on Friday and the Birkebeiner events will be on Saturday.
Birkebeiner organizers will be hosting daily live video updates on their YouTube and Facebook pages during the week starting at 7 p-m Tuesday.
