ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) – As the recreational boating season kicks off this weekend, the Minnesota DNR is offering some safety tips.
Tops on the list is to wear a life jacket. State law requires children under 10 to be wearing a life jacket when the boat is underway but the DNR says the best way for people of all ages to survive a fall into the water is to have a life jacket on.
Ninety percent of victims in boating fatalities were not wearing a life jacket.
Check safety equipment on the boat such as fire extinguishers and navigation lights to make sure they are in good operating order.
Leave the alcohol on shore. Operating a boat under the influence is not only illegal but is the greatest factor in fatal boating accidents.
