UNDATED (KDAL) – The Departments of Natural Resources in both Minnesota and Wisconsin are cracking down on intoxicated boat operators this summer.
As part of “Operation Dry Water”, a national campaign to deter boating under the influence of drugs and alcohol, the DNR and other agencies will be increasing patrols on state waterways over the 4th of July weekend.
During recent years in Minnesota nearly half of all boating fatalities involved alcohol and in Wisconsin alcohol use is a leading factor in recreational boating deaths.
Since “Operation Dry Water” began in 2009, law enforcement officers across the country have removed nearly 7 thousand impaired boat operators from waterways.
The DNR officials also remind boaters to make sure everyone in the boat wears a properly fitted and fastened life jacket. 85 percent of those who drown in boating incidents were not wearing a life jacket.
