TORONTO (Reuters) – The eastern Canadian community of Labrador City was ordered evacuated on Friday in the face of an encroaching wildfire.
The government of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador announced the evacuation order on Friday evening, saying the order “stems from extreme fire behaviour.”
“The fire has the potential to grow significantly closer to Labrador West over the next 24 to 48 hours. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant,” the provincial government posted on X.
There were 11 active wildfires in Labrador on Friday evening and weather conditions increased the potential for fire activity over the weekend, the province stated.
Labrador City, located near the Quebec border, had a population of about 9,000 in the 2021 census.
