VOYAGEURS NATIONAL PARK, MN (KDAL) – While assisting a civilian boat and battling high winds and rough waters, a National Park Service ranger drowned in Namakan Lake on Sunday.
According to a news release from Voyageurs National Park, the law enforcement ranger was responding to a call late Sunday morning for assistance from a distressed vessel on Namakan Lake.
While towing the vessel, the Park Service boat capsized forcing the ranger and the three people being assisted into the water.
The three boaters were able to swim to safety but the ranger was unaccounted for.
After a three hour search, the ranger’s body was recovered from the lake at about 3:20 p-m.
Assisting in the recovery were the U-S Border Patrol, St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and the Kabetogama Fire Department.
The accident is still under investigation.
The victim has been identified as 55 year old Park Ranger Kevin Grossheim of Kabetogama, Minnesota.
