VIRGINIA, MN (KDAL) – St. Louis County leaders held a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday at the County Landfill in Virginia for a new geothermal field, the first of its kind in Minnesota.
As garbage decomposes it produces heat which is captured in the geothermal cell and used to heat a leachate treatment plant that will be constructed about a quarter mile away.
The ten acre site at the landfill has a specialized liner with coils at its base. The liner collects the heat generated by the decomposing waste which is expected to reach 120 degrees.
The new cell was constructed at a cost of 3 million dollars and is seen as a blueprint for future waste management facilities.
