MADISON, WI (KDAL) – After about five years of public input, studies and reviews, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has decided to issue wetland and waterway permits to Enbridge Energy to replace a segment of the Line 5 pipeline.
Several other permits are needed from the DNR and U-S Army Corps of Engineers before the project around the Bad River Reservation in northern Wisconsin can get underway.
The existing line runs for 645 miles from Superior to Ontario and includes a 12 mile segment that runs through the reservation.
Enbridge is proposing to replace 20 miles of pipeline including that segment with 41 miles of new pipeline routed entirely outside the reservation’s borders.
