MADISON, WI (KDAL) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced the preliminary results of the 2024 bear hunting season.
The five week season that ended on October 8th, saw hunters harvesting 4,285 bears. The total was a big increase over the previous year when 2,922 bear were taken.
The DNR says even though the number of hunters was down slightly, success rates were generally higher than expected and harvest targets were exceeded in most management zones in the state.
Harvest targets are readjusted each year to increase, decrease or stabilize bear population trends. Wisconsin has a thriving bear population with an estimated 23,000 animals covering more than half the state.
Those who plan to hunt bear next year must apply before December 10th. Get more information on the DNR’s bear hunting webpage https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/hunt/bear
