TEMPE, Ariz. — What’s been a weird first half of the season closes out here in sunny, warm Arizona, as UMD faces Arizona State to wrap up this series and play for the last time before Christmas.
A 24-day break begins for the Bulldogs once this game concludes, a break that will take us up to a New Year’s Eve trip to Bemidji and the start of a rare three-game week.
(As noted back in October, conference changes forced the Bulldogs and Beavers to reschedule their non-conference, home-and-home series, and the sides preferred what was laid out, a Saturday game in Duluth to kick off the season, and this post-break return trip to Bemidji.)
Anyway, matters at hand. Crazy game Friday, one that saw UMD come tantalizingly close to coming back from three down in the third to tie the game late. But one that saw said comeback ultimately fall short.
Oh, and starting goalie Klayton Knapp — filling in for an injured Adam Gajan — left the game with a lower-body injury in the third period and did not return, replaced by Zach Sandy. No Gajan again in this game, as Sandy will start and Knapp will back up. My guess is Knapp is only available in the event of an emergency, but as Asia (and, to be fair, Nelson as well) once said, only time will tell.
If we get any info from UMD coach Scott Sandelin on Knapp’s status, I’ll pass it along both on the air and on BlueSky.
