MADISON, WI (KDAL) – A case of highly pathogenic avian influenza has been confirmed by the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection in Burnett County Wisconsin.
The affected commercial poultry flock has been depopulated to prevent the spread of the disease and birds from the flock will not enter the food system.
The bird flu has been circulating in wild and domestic birds across North America since December of 2021. The virus is highly contagious and often fatal to domestic poultry and is spread by contact with infected birds, their droppings, equipment or clothing worn by those working with them.
The Agriculture Department urges all livestock owners to implement bio-security measures to protect flocks and herds from the disease.
The CDC says the bird flu does not pose an immediate public health concern or food safety risk and that cooking eggs and poultry to an internal temperature of 165 degrees will kill the virus.
