SAULT STE. MARIE, MI (KDAL) – On Monday, the U-S Coast Guard began ice breaking in harbors around the Great Lakes to prevent newly formed ice from hindering commercial vessel traffic.
Called “Operation Taconite”, the cutter Mackinaw is assigned to manage the ice breaking needs in the western Lake Superior area including the Twin Ports.
While ice breaking is underway, the Coast Guard recommends that recreational ice users stay clear of harbor shipping channels.
Operation Taconite is the U-S Coast Guard’s largest domestic ice breaking operation and includes Lakes Superior, Michigan, the St. Mary’s River, the Straits of Mackinac and Georgian Bay.
