For the Bulldogs, Friday’s win was needed. There was a clear commitment to playing better defensively, and while the Sun Devils are probably lamenting a few Grade-A chances where pucks were whiffed on or shanked, or a pass was off-target, but UMD can feel the same way, especially about the latter half of the third period.
Aaron Pionk’s missle of a snap shot in overtime gave UMD a 3-2 victory, and it creates a little more separation for seventh-place UMD on eighth-place and idle St. Cloud State.
Now, we’ll see if the Bulldogs can put together a better game. The Sun Devils create a lot of chaos within their game, and it almost paid off a number of times Friday. UMD’s ability to control that chaos as much as possible will be a key in this rematch.
UMD changes nothing. Charlie Schoen is out for Arizona State, replaced on the top line by Ryan Alexander. David Hymovitch draws in on the fourth line. The Sun Devils also change goalies.
