DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – In filing its 2025 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) with the Public Utilities Commission, Minnesota Power has outlined a plan to achieve 90 percent renewable energy and replace coal by 2035.
The IRP calls for adding renewable projects, energy storage and natural gas generation that will replace their last coal fired plant at the Boswell Energy Center.
Under the Minnesota Power Energy Forward strategy, the company has converted its power supply from one that was 90 percent coal in 2005 to its current 60 percent renewable energy.
If approved the 2025 IRP will enable them to reach 80 percent renewable in the next five years and 90 percent by 2035.
The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission now begins a process that reviews the IRP which includes input from customers, local communities and interested organizations. A final decision is expected in 2026.
