DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Over the last six months scammers have taken more than 400 thousand dollars from five unsuspecting residents of St. Louis County in several types of fraudulent activity.
At a news conference on Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office detailed how people can avoid being a victim of a scam.
Authorities say scams can come by email, various online apps or on the phone.
Among the red flags to watch for are people claiming to have “inside information”, offering opportunities to make large amounts of money, keeping you on the phone and not allowing a call back or in person meeting.
Another common scam is someone claiming to be a relative such as a grandchild that was in an accident or jailed and needs immediate money.
The Sheriff’s Department advises citizens not to respond to random messages from unknown numbers or profiles and never share personal or financial information with someone you don’t know or have never met.
Hang up or cease communications if you are asked to transfer money, buy gift cards or provide identifying information.
