SAULT STE. MARIE, MI (KDAL) – The U-S Army Corps of Engineers has announced that the Poe Lock at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan will be opening on March 21st.
That is four days sooner than the usual opening and marks an early start to the Great Lakes shipping season.
The Soo Locks officially closed back on January 16th when annual repairs and maintenance were accomplished. The smaller MacArthur Lock will open in April.
More than 4,500 vessels carrying around 80 million tons of cargo pass through the Soo Locks each year.
The St. Lawrence Seaway is set to open on March 22 allowing ocean going ships to make their way into the Great Lakes system.
The annual First Ship Contest from Visit Duluth and the Duluth Seaway Port Authority will end on Sunday, March 16th and all entries regarding the arrival of the first “saltie” must be submitted before midnight on that date.
