ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has tips to avoid conflicts with hungry bears that are emerging from hibernation.
Homeowners should remove bird feeders and check their property for other food sources that could attract bears.
The DNR bear project leader, Andrew Tri, says birdseed and suet are very tempting for bears looking for a quick, high calorie meal. Bears can pick up the scent of food from more than a mile away and once they find that food source they are likely to return.
Make sure garbage is secure, don’t leave pet food outdoors and clean and store grills and smokers.
People should be cautious around bears and give them plenty of space.
If a bear problem continues after food sources have been removed, contact a Minnesota DNR area wildlife office for further advice.
