DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The Lake Superior Zoo in Duluth has announced the arrival of a rare sand cat from the Kansas City Zoo.
The female sand cat named Bastet is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquarium’s Sand Cat Species Survival Plan.
There are only 31 sand cats in association zoos and the program plays a critical role in preserving the species. The cats are difficult to study in the wild due to their solitary nature, remote desert habitats and track covering behavior.
For now, Bastet is housed separately under standard zoo quarantine protocols to ensure she is free of any diseases or parasites before being introduced to other animals.
She will eventually be paired with either Tony or Pumpkin, two male sand cats already at the zoo to establish a breeding pair.
