BAYFIELD, WI (KDAL) – A recent wind storm created a dense tree blowdown on a part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.
The southeastern portion of Oak Island has several trail sections closed as crews work to remove the downed trees.
The public is being asked to remain only on open trail sections which provide access to most of the island.
Park staff also reminds hikers that there is a high bear population on Oak Island and that they need to remain “bear aware.”
Keep at least 50 feet from a bear and if you encounter one on a trail, let it know you are there and slowly back away. If the bear follows you, raise your arms and yell until it leaves the area.
If a bear does not readily leave, report the encounter to park staff as soon as possible.
Keep food and other items locked in a bear resistant container when not in use.
Regular updates on trails and other conditions can be found online at go.nps.gov/ApostleCondtions.
