DULUTH, MN (CBS-3) – The Duluth City Council has approved giving the Greater Downtown Council $300,000 to hire a social worker at Monday night’s meeting.
The measure passed on a vote of seven to two after much discussion.
According to Mayor Emily Larson, the goal is to improve the quality of life in the downtown waterfront district.
The proposal comes at the request of many business and property owners in the downtown area.
They say a social worker would help meet the needs of some community members experiencing homelessness, addiction, or mental health crisis.
The $300,000 would come from the American Rescue Plan money and pay for the position for three years.
Some community members spoke against the plan at the meeting with many feeling the position should reach the needs of the entire city, not just the downtown area.
