DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Duluth firefighters, with assistance from an Ames Construction crew, battled a smoky fire at a homeless encampment under I-35 Monday evening.
The fire was located under the freeway near the Mesaba-Superior Street exit.
A variety of debris including several propane tanks were found in the encampment and firefighters were challenged in extinguishing the fire due to drug paraphernalia and other sources of fuel including gasoline.
Crews were on the scene for an hour and a half fighting the fires at several locations under the structure.
Nobody was found in the area at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.
The Fire Department thanks Ames Construction for the use of their tanker truck.
The Duluth Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire that was reported just after 6 p-m.
