DULUTH, MN (CBS-3) – Duluth’s city council on Monday night voted against an ordinance to declare a public health emergency.
The ordinance, introduced by Councilor Terese Tomanek at the agenda session last week, required a unanimous vote to pass.
Councilors voted it down 7-2
If the emergency ordinance had passed with a unanimous vote, the council would have been able to enact a mask mandate with another vote requiring a simple majority.
Councilors Derek Medved and Roz Randorf voted against the emergency ordinance.
The council did, however, pass a resolution to address the emergency powers of the mayor to declare a mandate on her own.
Should Duluth’s Mayor Emily Larson decide to enact a mandate, the council would have three days to approve her actions.
