GRAND RAPIDS, MN (KDAL) – Self driving vehicles will be appearing soon on roads in the Grand Rapids area.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation says the demonstration project is one of several in the state.
The pilot project called goMARTI will begin in September and offer free, on-demand rides to residents.
Although the vehicles are considered self driving, there will always be an operator on board to verify its safe operation.
During the project, MnDOT and partners hope to see how the automated vehicle technology works in rural and winter conditions and determine what economic development could be attracted.
A community event to learn more about the project is being held Friday through Sunday at the Weekend of Wheels in Grand Rapids.
