MADISON, WI (KDAL) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is using goats to help control the invasive buckthorn that has overrun the Brule River State Forest.
The goats munch on woody invasive plants like buckthorn that out-compete native vegetation and are detrimental to the health of the ecosystem.
Goat grazing is also an effective method to decrease the use of herbicides.
The goats began their work this spring and are back for another round of grazing at the Brule River State Forest.
People can also help avoid spreading harmful invasive species by wiping shoes and cleaning equipment when entering and leaving state parks and forests.
