DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) is seeking 17.5 million dollars in state bonding funds to make urgent, permanent structural and mechanical repairs.
The facility is dealing with the aftermath of a critical failure of one of its secondary clarifiers in October of last year.
It remains out of service awaiting delivery of a new replacement center well pipe.
The other three clarifiers were inspected and similar structural corrosion was found.
Temporary repairs were made to prevent immediate failure but a permanent fix is critical.
If the clarifiers fail there is an impending risk to public health and pollution of the St. Louis River and Lake Superior.
