DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – St. Louis County Public Health is partnering with the American Indian Community Housing Organization and Fond du Lac Human Services to share a message about the importance of getting tested for HIV and for the treatment options for those testing positive.
Since 2019, Duluth and the surrounding area has seen an increase in HIV cases.
Before then there were zero to five newly infected individuals per year but in the last five years there have been 37 new cases in the region, 27 of them in Duluth.
HIV is a virus that can cause AIDS which, without treatment, can weaken the immune system.
While there is no vaccine or cure for HIV, treatment allows those living with it to lower the levels of HIV in the body to an undetectable and un-transmittable level.
