ST. CLOUD, Minn. — After a Friday game that closed with two rather notable fracases (fracasi?) in the final seconds, we are back for the rematch.
And in a sport that allows its teams to dress 19 skaters, UMD will be one man short.
The Bulldogs are without forward and captain Luke Loheit, suspended by the NCHC after he took a cross-checking major in the second of the skirmishes, which happened after time expired in the third period. It was the only penalty assessed out of that.
(Yes, the officials could have loaded up on roughing minors and double minors, but at 20:00 of the third period, what exactly would have been the point?)
UMD is also missing sophomore forward Luke Johnson, whom we are presuming is not healthy enough to play after getting checked in the head by SCSU’s Grant Ahcan in the third period. We are confident he did not take another shift, and there was plenty of five-on-five time after the Ahcan penalty expired. Kyler Kleven draws back in, and UMD will dress Joey Pierce as a 12th forward, meaning the Bulldogs will deploy six defensemen and only 18 total skaters.
St. Cloud State will be without junior pivot Mason Salquist for reasons unknown. We’ve heard there are illnesses going around, so hopefully it’s nothing more than that. SCSU is dressing an extra skater in Jack Rogers for the warmup, and will scratch someone after that.
Matthew Thiessen vs Dominic Basse again.
