SAULT STE. MARIE, MI (KDAL) – The MacArthur Lock at the Soo will be closing on December 17th for routine maintenance and inspection.
The larger Poe Lock is scheduled to remain open until January 15th or until commercial traffic ceases for the season.
The 800 foot long MacArthur Lock was built in 1943 and this period of maintenance is critical to keep it operational during the shipping season.
To complete the work, the lock will be dewatered and a temporary panel bridge will be installed for moving materials and equipment to job sites through the winter.
More than 4,500 vessels, carrying up to 80 million tons of cargo, pass through the Soo Locks each year.
