More significant than winning Friday was how UMD won, ending an eight-game winless streak.
The Bulldogs played a strong game. No silly penalties, no passengers, and when the chips were down, it was UMD’s older guys leading the charge. Luke Loheit scored early in the third to give UMD its first lead since Nov. 4 against Minnesota. Omaha tied the game 17 seconds later, but the Bulldogs — led by their, well, leaders — showed no panic. Connor McMenamin found a loose puck off his own shot with 7:01 left to give UMD the lead, and this time it stuck.
This brings on a new challenge. Can UMD finish off the weekend the right way? Or will Omaha find its game faster and more consistently to earn a split?
UMD changes nothing, as defenseman Riley Bodnarchuk (undisclosed) sits out a second straight game, and freshman Braden Fischer gets another game as the 13th skater. Omaha is skating 20 for warmies, as Michael Abgrall is listed as taking the warmup, with Cam Mitchell in his place on the fourth line. We’ll see who the Mavericks scratch after the warmup.
