ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) – High temperatures mostly in the 40’s this week and the previous weeks of above normal temperatures has prompted the Minnesota DNR to warn about weakened ice.
The ice could be especially hazardous on small ponds, creeks and drainage ditches that tend to attract curious kids.
The DNR is urging parents to talk with their children about the dangers and to stay off ice that is deteriorating much earlier than usual.
Since these small bodies of water don’t attract ice anglers, they are often overlooked when it comes to ice safety.
Over the last 25 years, at least 8 children under the age of ten have died after falling through ice in neighborhood ponds.
