DULUTH, MN (Northern News Now) – City Councilors rejected a resolution at their meeting on Monday night calling for a permanent ceasefire in the war in Gaza.
It was another packed Duluth City Hall as councilors heard from those for and against the resolution before the vote.
Since its introduction to the council’s agenda last Thursday, the permanent ceasefire resolution has caused residents to come out by the hundreds, leading to a more than two-hour public comment period Monday night.
In the end, the council voted to not pass the resolution despite some councilors hoping to join cites like Minneapolis and St. Paul in officially calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
The resolution was rejected on a 5-4 vote.
Voting against the measure were Councilors Forsman, Kennedy, Nephew, Swenson and Tomanek voted against.
