DULUTH, MN (Northern News Now) – Authorities are searching for two people who went missing in BWCA this weekend.
According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, around 7:20 p-m on Saturday, crews were dispatched to the report of a water emergency on Iron Lake in the BWCA.
A caller reported two canoes had gone over Curtain Falls, one person was injured and two were missing.
According to authorities, around 12:30 a.m. Sunday the injured person was flown to Essentia Duluth with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.
Later on Sunday search efforts resumed led by the St. Louis County Rescue Squad.
One person who was with the group, not involved in the incident, was flown out of the wilderness.
Authorities have issued an emergency closure order for a portion of the BWCA to help with search and rescue efforts.
The order is in effect from Monday through Tuesday night.
Areas closed include Iron Lake, the LaCroix-Bottle portage, the LaCroix-Iron portage, and Crooked Lake west of Sunday Bay.
UPDATE:
Authorities have released the names of the missing canoeists, Jesse Haugen, 41, of Cambridge and Reis Grams, 40, from Lino Lakes.
