LAKE VERMILION, MN (Northern News Now) – Underground tours at the Lake Vermilion Soudan Underground Mine have been suspended while crews work to remove water from the mine.
Heavy rains from last week inundated the underground mine and a lightning strike cut power to the state park, halting the de-watering pump station.
The mine received 7.6 inches of rain in 24 hours, causing flooding in the bottom of the mine at level 27, where the tour operates.
Staff are currently working to install a new pump, which is expected to take several weeks.
Underground mine tours are suspended until after July 23rd but surface tours will continue daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
